Your resume and cover letter are the only voice you have when you are applying for a job. They need to be stellar! So many people are looking for jobs and applying for the jobs you are applying for. You have to remember that for every job that's out there, some of these companies are receiving hundreds of resumes. If your cover letter and resume do not stand out, you will not get the job. It's that simple.
I believe that you should have a standard resume that covers the basics of your job experiences; however tweaking your resume and/or cover letter to speak exactly to the points of the job description can be extremely beneficial. Does that mean that you change your resume or cover letter every time you apply for a job? Yes, if it's necessary!
